Trade Marks

YZ

The YZ mark was a lozenge enclosing the letters YZ. Outside that are the words 'TRADE MARK' and 'MADE IN ENGLAND'.

There were two basic styles; One (left) has 'TRADE MARK' following the lower sides of the lozenge. The other (right) has 'YZ' larger, with 'TRADE MARK' running horizontally and split across the apex of the lozenge. Additionally, there may be a registered design number beneath the trade mark.

Forming The YZ Trade Mark

The marks were usually stamped or branded into the base of the piece. Some cast objects though may have the mark incorporated into the casting.

Cast:

Sometimes the removable part of an ashtray, made of phenolic resin, will be present. Often these will be unmarked but some were cast with the YZ mark.

 

Sticker:

Very rarely, a sticker may be found on the base of a piece.
