These are copies of Henry Howell & Co Ltd's original registered designs, stored at The National Archives at Kew. The finished product frequently differs somewhat from the registered design - presumably the designs were used as a guide, to be interpreted by imaginative craftsmen, taking account of the raw materials available.
Clicking on the design will bring up an image of the product, if there is one, and details of National Archives catalogue number and design registration date. If no image is available, only those details are shown.
The following designs are of car mascots. For very many years, I'd never seen a trace of a YZ car mascot 'in the flesh' and had begun to think that examples of the actual products no longer exist. Thanks to Chris Howell, I have now not only seen one but been able to photograph it to include on the site (No. 704771, Pelican, below). I find it strange that many more haven't surfaced - since it was considered worth the time and expense to register different designs over a period of six years (1924 to 1929), they presumably sold in reasonable numbers. UPDATE: Since writing the above I have realised that an image which was already on the site is of Design No. 744831. There are now three of the Pelican mascots known to be in existence.
